301 SC lawyers urge to end oppressive measures against Prof Yunus

Staff Reporter  :
A total of 301 lawyers of the Bangladesh Supreme Court on Thursday issued a statement demanding an end to the present government’s harassment and oppressive measures against Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus.

In the statement, the lawyers said, “As the lawyers, we want assurance of safety of all citizens of the Country and fair application of the laws.

We, the lawyers of the Constitutional Court of Bangladesh, strongly condemn this fascist behaviour of the government, and are calling for an immediate cessation of all kind of the staged vindicatory process and withdrawal of all ongoing vexatious cases filed against Prof Muhammad Yunus.”

Supreme Court lawyers Rezaul Karim Reza and M Mahbubur Rahman Khan issued the statement on behalf of the 301 lawyers.

Former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Advocate Zainul Abedin, Senior Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, former SCBA Secretaries Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Dr Fariduzzaman Forhad, Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir, Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman, among others, signed the statement.

“We have realised with deep concern that the present government is taking various measures of oppression and harassment out of revenge against this great pioneer for conceptualising the mechanism for uprooting hunger and poverty from the society.

The current government is trying to eliminate whoever it considers to be its opponent by using the state machineries,” also read the statement.

“Under the wrath of the current undemocratic government, many prominent people and politicians have either been sentenced or are in prison through dictating verdicts under the ‘so-called judicial process’ in false and harassing cases.

The ongoing judicial process by current illegitimate government against Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus is just slanted, stirred up and outrageous,” said the statement.

The lawyers said, “We the lawyers’ Society of this Country, hold the opinion that Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof Yunus is just being targeted out of the vengeance of the present government and in particular being the victim of personal outrage and enviousness of the head of the government herself.

The ongoing judicial harassment against Prof Yunus using the state apparatus under the cover of a formal trial process, is greatly damaging the image of Bangladesh across the world.”
