DAG broke discipline by briefing media on AG office’s letter: Law Minister

Staff Reporter:
Law Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan breached discipline by making statements about a letter to be prepared by Attorney General office protesting the recent letter in favour of Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhmmad Yunus issued by global figures and Nobel Laureates.

The Law Minister made the remarks while responding to a question from journalists after he emerged from a discussion on the proposed Cyber Security Act.

Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) organised the discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
“He (Imran) is a DAG in the Attorney General’s Office.

If he speaks to reporters, he should either resign and speak, or seek the Attorney General’s permission (before he talks). He didn’t. He has broken discipline,” the Law Minister said.

When asked what would happen next regarding the issue, the Law Minister said, “I will look into it.”

DAG Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan on Monday said he refrained from signing a statement, being prepared by the Attorney General’s office, protesting the recent letter from global figures to the Prime Minister over trial proceedings against Prof Yunus.

“I agree with the statement issued by the Nobel Laureates and world leaders about the trial proceedings against Prof Yunus. I think he (Prof Yunus) is an honourable man. He is being defamed and thatthis is judicial harassment,” said the Deputy Attorney General at a press briefing on Monday on the Supreme Court premises.

The Attorney General’s office has issued a notification asking signatures from the Attorney General, Additional Attorney Generals, Deputy Attorney Generals and Assistant Attorney Generals in order to issue a statement in protest against the global figures’ statement, he said.

“I decided that I will not sign the statement to be prepared by the Attorney General’s office,” said the DAG.

A total of 104 Nobel Laureates and 79 other global figures in an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 28 expressed concern about the safety and freedom of Prof Yunus.

In the letter, they “respectfully asked” the PM to “immediately suspend the current judicial proceedings against Prof Yunus”.
