The Awami League backed teachers (Blue panel) of Dhaka University (DU) have expressed concerns over the issuance of an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requesting suspension of legal proceedings against Prof Muhammad Yunus by over 160 global leaders.
The university teachers association expressed the concern in a press release on Sunday saying that the global leaders’ demands are entirely baseless and an interference in country’s judicial system.
In the press release, the teachers body claimed that the statement is a direct unwanted interference in the country’s judicial system and sovereignty.
Apart from this, the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) announced a human chain programme today in front of Aparajeyo Bangla protesting in this statement.
“Such a statement about a case under trial in the independent judicial system of Bangladesh is contrary to the rule of law and human rights.
It disregards international law, customs and etiquette and amounts to disrespect for the independent judiciary and sovereignty of a state,” also added in the press release.
The teachers also hope that those persons who made this statements on behalf of Yunus shall respect the laws and customs of Bangladesh and shall understand the legal and constitutional provisions.
They also called upon the global leaders to refrain from criticising the judicial and state functionaries of independent sovereign Bangladesh by making unwanted and unintended statements.
