Re-excavated Naleya River inaugurated

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury on Wednesday inaugurated the re-excavated Naleya River under Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur.

This re-excavated Naleya River is 19.14 kilometers long and about 3.5 meters deep, flowing over Shanerhat and Panchgachi Unions of Pirganj Upazila.

About 12 crore 66 lakh taka has been spent for this. In the event, project director of EIRP project of Barendra Multi-purpose Development Authority, Supervising Engineer Habibur Rahman Khan said, due to the completion of re-dredging of Naleya river, inundation of 7,520 hectares of arable land on both its banks has been removed and about 5,000 hectares of land has come under irrigation facilities through pollution-free water.

Besides, it has been possible to plant 8000 forest, fruit and medicinal trees on both its banks along with fish farming in the vast fresh water of Naleya River.

At this time, Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury released 40 kg of fish fry of different varieties including cotton, catal mrigel in the open water of Naleya river.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobashwer Hasan, Police Superintendent Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, BMDA Executive Engineer AKM Moshiur Rahman and Pirganj Municipality Mayor Tajidul Islam Shamim were present on the occasion.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said in the event organized on this occasion that the current government is an agriculture-friendly government.

Therefore, new projects are being implemented in agriculture expansion through irrigation facility expansion.

He said, the re-excavation of Naleya River will open new doors for socio-economic development of farmers in this area.
