BCL, BNP programmes cause sufferings to city dwellers

Staff Reporter  :
Programmes of two major political parties in the heart of capital caused immense sufferings to the city dwellers due to severe traffic jam and shortfall of transports as most of the vehicles were hired by the parties to carry their supporters to the venues.

Remembering Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa, Bangaldesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, organised a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan and it was attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Conversely, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organised a rally in front of their party headquarters at Naya Paltan on the occasion of the party’s 45th founding anniversary.

Finally BNP brought out a colorful procession from the party headquarters to Rajdhani Super Market in Wari Thana.

Due to these two major events, the traffic movement in the major thoroughfares virtually came to a standstill and its impact was spread to other streets which were clogged by the vehicles unable to move because of the presence of the leaders and workers with banners.

The Chhatra League rally was started at 3pm and Prime Minister arrived in the venue at 3:40pm. During this time, the vehicular movement from Matshya Bhaban to Shahbag was closed.

The Chhatra League leaders and workers reached the venue on foot. During this time, people suffered for hours in these areas.

Starting from 10 am this morning, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Department has closed off 11 key points in the city to manage the traffic flow due to the gathering for the Chhatra League rally.

These points include Kakrail Crossing, Hotel Intercontinental Crossing, Kakrail Mosque Crossing, Kakrail Church Crossing, UBL Crossing, High Court Crossing, Doyel Chattar Crossing, Dhaka University Medical Center, Jagannath Hall Crossing, and Vaskarjo Crossing.

As a result, severe traffic congestion created on all alternate routes in the vicinity.

After 3 pm, several roads in the capital witnessed intense traffic jams.

Particularly, Dhanmondi-32 and the entire stretch from Kalabagan to New Market to Azimpur had seen thousands of vehicles stuck in traffic.

Many vehicles were idle for a long period, causing frustration among commuters.

Travelers resorted to walking to their destinations, navigating through the congested roads.

Even some of them abandoned vehicles to continue on foot.

This situation created significant inconvenience for people in the affected areas.

Furthermore, traffic jams had also been reported in areas such as Farmgate, Moghbazar, Paltan, and the Press Club in various parts of the capital.

Traffic Police said that there was shortfall of vehicles because most of these were bound for programmes and as a result city dwellers suffered.

On the other hand, BNP’s rally began at 3pm. BNP’s procession started from the party office and marched Fakirapul Moor, Notre Dame College, Shapla Chattar and Ittefaq Moor before ending at Rajdhani Market.

During this time, there was huge traffic jam in the entire roads.
