Man arrested for ‘embezzling’ Tk 1200cr from Basic Bank

Police arrested a man named Md. Anowar Hossain who was sentenced 17 years in jail for embezzling Tk 1,200 crore from Basic Bank in Noakhali on Sunday (August 27) night.
Sonaimuri police station officer in-charge (OC) Md. Ziaul Haq confirmed the matter to the media saying that accused Anowar was arrested based on secret information from Noakhali’s Sonaimuri Upazila.
He is the so-called chairman of BD Softex and son of Dr. Md. Giash Uddin Selim of Wasekpur village under the Upazila.
Earlier, the arrestee had been sentenced to 17 years of jail for embezzling Tk 1,200 crore from Basic Bank.
In 2015, Anowar embezzled TK 1,200 crore through Bismillah group. Later, when he tried to flee the country to London DB police arrested the convict, he said.
“However, later Anowar got bail and went into hiding. Now we have arrested him and he will be produced before Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court,” the official added.
