Rain brings hope to Aman farmers in Jashore, Gaibandha

Aman farmers of Chowgachha upazila of the district see rays of hope in continuous rain in last two days.

During the current season, Aman paddy has been cultivated in about 20,000 hectares of land in 11 unions and municipalities in the upazila of the district.

After two consecutive days of rain, the Aman farmers of Chaugachha upazila were relieved of anxiety, said Upazila Agriculture Officer Mosabbir Hussain.

Due to insufficient rainfall in month of Asharh and Shrabon this year, paddy was planted through irrigation in about eighty percent of Aman cultivation land. Irrigation activities were continued as there was no rain.

Farmers Saber Ali Sardar, Saiful Islam, Samchul Huda Dafadar, Toniraj, Sagar Khan, and Ishaq Ali Dafadar of Sinhajhuli village said that the rain in Bhadra month is beneficial for cultivation of Aman rice.

Nurul Islam, Abdul Latif Pandit, Aman farmer of Ramkrishmpur village of the upazila said that the current rainfall has changed the appearance of Aman paddy in the field.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Mosabbir Hussain said that the farmers were worried about the cultivation of Aman paddy due to low less rainfall in Asharh and Shrabon months.

Farmers will benefits from continuous rains.

BSS from Gaibandha adds: The cultivation of transplanted (T) Aman paddy is nearing completion in all seven upazilas of the district during the current season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 1, 27,460 hectares of land have been brought under T-Aman cultivation this year.

At the initial stage of the season, the farmers were facing troubles in farming the paddy for want of rainfall.

Later, after getting desired rainfall in the beginning of the Bangla month Bhadra, the farmers are passing their busy time with farming the paddy on their respective land.

Meanwhile, as many as 1, 22, 229 hectares of land of the district were farmed T-Aman paddy till August 24 and the rest land would be brought under the farming within August 30, said an official of the DAE.

To bring the total land under T-Aman farming, the farmers of the district prepared seedbeds on 7,089 hectares of land, he also said.

Earlier, to make the cultivation programme a grand success, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) timely distributed high quality Aman seed to the farmers at fair prices.

Besides, different state run commercial banks including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank disbursed agri loans on easy terms to the poor and marginal farmers of the district to help them cultivate the paddy on their land, sources said.

Apart from this, DAE also provided training to the farmers of the district for adopting modern technologies of paddy cultivation, crop management and preservation of quality seed.

Talking to the BSS, deputy director of DAE Krishibid Khorshed Alam Sarker said necessary measures have been taken for availability of fertilizers, insecticides and other agri inputs at the grass root level of the district.

Farmers have already cultivated 96 percent of their total land till August 24 and the rest would be finished by August 30.
