Scarless thyroid surgery gains popularity

Staff Reporter :
Scarless thyroid surgery, performing at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for the first time in Bangladesh, has gained popularity among beauty conscious people, especially women as it does not create any scar on the patient’s body.

The thyroid patients flocked to the hospital from different parts of the country everyday in a bid to taking treatment of the diseases, according to the hospital authorities.

Dr Mahbub Alam, a residential surgeon at the Department of Nose, Ear and Throat (ENT) of the hospital, is leading the surgery team.

Although doctors in developed countries — including Singapore, America, Korea and China — regularly perform scarless thyroid surgery, it was done for the first time in Bangladesh.

This type of operation is slightly costlier than the conventional method, but is very popular in developed countries as it does not create any scar on the patient’s body.

In that continuity, Dr Mahbub performed the thyroid tumour operation through endoscopy by creating a leak under the lip of the patient.

Thyroid tumour size up to 8.0 centimetres could be operated on in this method of surgery.

Dr Mahbub said there would be no scar on the throat for applying this method.

Post-operation complications and risk are also lesser and the voice would also remain reasonable, said Dr Mahbub.

He also said that he and his team are passing busy time as the number of thyroid patients is increasing day-by-day and he is completing surgery, even amid his illness.

Under the circumstance, I had to complete surgery of a thyroid patient last week, despite of my ankle sprain as there was no replacement doctor at the hospital, Dr Mahbub said.

“I have done it on my own-responsibility and for the sake of the patient,” he added.
