Six leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), went missing from Friday.
Five of JCD leaders went missing when they engaged in searching for JCD Senior Join-secretary Mominul Islam Jisan. Mominul also went missing from Friday morning from his home at Azimpur in the capital.
The JCD claimed that the five leaders have been picked up by police.
However, the law enforcement agencies are yet to comment in this regard.
“Under Bangladesh law, detainees must be brought before a court within 24 hours of their detention, and it is possible that this may still happen,” David Bergman, a British investigative journalist, blogger, and political commentator on Bangladesh, in a tweet said.
“The police should acknowledge their detention and either bring them to court for legitimate reasons or release them,” he added.
The JCD already issued a press releasedemanding immediate release of the leaders.
The other five leaders are Shahadat Hossain, deputy general secretary of the central body, Md Hasanur Rahman, vice-president of Dhaka University unit, Abdullah Al Riyad, president of Amar Ekushey Hall unit of DU, Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babar, former joint general secretary of Jahangirnagar University and Arif Billah , joint general secretary of private university.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi issued a statement expressing concern about the detention.
“The DB police picked up the five leaders when they went to search Jisan, another missing person,” the JCD said in a press release.
