8 injured in Barishal AL-BNP clash

At least eight activists of ruling political party Bangladesh Awami League and main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were injured in a clash in Barishal’s Gournadi upazila on Thursday.

The injured were rescued and treated at different hospitals.

Joint convener of Upazila Jubo Dal, Kawsar Talukdar, on Thursday complained that a prayer meeting was organized at the Al-Noor Jame Mosque at West Samarsingh village in Khanjapur Union of the upazila on Wednesday afternoon for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from illness.

The local Awami League activists attacked them in the mosque with batons and disrupted the program.

Chhatra Dal activist Ratul Munshi, Upazila Jubo Dal leader Kawsar Talukdar, BNP convening committee member Mojibor Master and former UP member Saidul Islam were injured in the attack and admitted to Barishal Sher-e-bangla medical college hospital and Kalkini upazila health complex for treatment.

However, denying the allegations of the attack on BNP activists, union AL president Matlab Matubbar said that BNP leaders and activists attacked AL men while they were going to attend an event, leaving four to five AL activists injured.

The ward AL president Maqbul Bepari, meanwhile, filed a written complaint with Gournadi police station Wednesday night in this connection.

Gournadi police station officer-in-charge Afzal Hossain said that on information, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Legal action will be taken after investigation, the OC added.
