‘Fascist regime controlling media, has ruined society’: BNP
Staff Reporter :
One of the main weapons of fascism is to control the media, which the government is doing now.
There are so many media in the country, but they are not able to work freely.
The media is not independent even after 52 years of independence.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with this allegation against the government while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on Monday.
“The pervasive fascist-controlled media is suppressing the truth in the country.
Over the past 15 years, they have been perpetuating this narrative.
Without democracy, free media is not possible,” he said.
The BNP organised a seminar titled ‘Media in Bangladesh: One and a half decades of nightmare’ held at a city hotel.
“Corporate media has been created in the country, which owned by the big businessmen.
They have created this corporate culture to use for their own business, bank facilities and money laundering etc.
So, free media is not possible without democracy,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
The foremost necessity is to unite people, he said adding that the international community is saying that there is no democracy in Bangladesh, no elections.
Therefore, now it is necessary for people to march on the path of unity, with courage, for the rights of democracy, he added.
The BNP Secretary General alleged that the government has turned the society into a ruined society.
“Not only just politics, the incumbent government has also ruined the parliament, media as well as every sector of the country.
This government has completed all arrangements to establish BAKSAL to make it permanent,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Ismail Zabiullah presented the keynote paper in the seminar.
In the keynote paper, it was said that this government has taken away the freedom of the media by creating a repressive black law.
Even if you like a comment or share it anti-government posts you have to face the law under the Digital Security Act.
The BNP Secretary General, however, said that now it is necessary for people to march on the path of unity, with courage, for the rights of democracy.
Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP’s standing committee, stated, “The government instils fear in the media to maintain control.
BNP will work to restore journalists’ rights in the future.”
Speaking at the event, BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, “BNP stands as a shield to protect democracy.
We must assemble to safeguard the rights of media workers.”
During the event, among others, journalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol, who was jailed under the DSA and the daughter of the slain journalist from Jamalpur, Golam Rabbani, spoke at the event.
