Govt offers rewards for info on Bangabandhu’s killers: FM
Staff Reporter :
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has stated that if any citizen provides information about the five fugitives associated with the assassination of Bangabandhu, the government will reward them.
He said this during a discussion organised by the Muktijudher Chetonay Sangbadik Forum as part of the observance of the 48th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Jatiya Press Club on Monday.
“The then government after 1975 sent all those involved in the assassination of Bangabandhu to various countries.
When they realise that charges may be brought against them in the country at any time, they disappear under different identities.
I want to tell the citizens that if anyone can provide information about these five individuals, the government will reward you,” he said.
He further said, “Among the seven murderers, the government has obtained information about two.
The remaining five are still outside the country.
One of those whose information we have obtained is Rashid Chowdhury, who is in the United States.
Another is in Canada. We have written numerous letters for them.”
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself sent a letter to the US President.
However, they always say that this issue is in the office of their Attorney General.
Two years ago, the Attorney General’s office told us to provide information about the case that was in Bangladesh.
We have provided them with all that information,” he continued.
He added, “Furthermore, regarding the individual in Canada associated with the assassination, the Canadian government is not providing any information.
We have also filed a case in Canada on this matter.”
“The Canadian court has said that there is no obstacle to providing information about the individual’s whereabouts.
Despite the court’s directive, the Canadian government is not sharing that information with us.
The Canadian government is consistently evasive.
We know about these two individuals, but we don’t know anything about the other five,” he continued.
The Foreign Minister stated that Canada, like the United States, is a country where the law is extremely powerful, and the country governed by law cannot provide refuge to murderers.
Former Information Advisor to Prime Minister Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury chaired the discussion, with Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud was present as the Chief Guest.
