10 hijras held in capital

Complaints of vandalism have been received against a group of the third gender commonly known as hijra in Mohammadpur area of the capital.

Following the complaint, the police arrested 10 members of the group from Mohammadia Housing Limited area under Mohammadpur Police Station on Thursday.

The arrestees have been identified as Julie (30), Tahmina (25), Riya (35), Moni (19), Nayan (36), Babu (20), Pahari (54), Jyoti (25), Sumi (35) and Sagarika (35).

In this incident, the victim’s family filed a case with the Mohammadpur Police Station.
According to the source, the victim Masud Rana is a journalist of a private television. His wife gave birth to a son five months ago.

After that, this third gender group was regularly visiting his house of Mohammadia Homes Limited and demanding Tk10,000. But every time they were turned away from the gate of the building.

On Thursday around 11 pm a group of 15/20 people of the third gender including Julie, Riya went to demand donations. But the security personnel of these buildings asked them to leave.

Enraged by this, the group forcibly entered the building and assaulted the security personnel and also assaulted the victim Masud. At that time they vandalized inside the building. Being informed, the police went to the spot and arrested them.

Confirming the matter, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahfuzul Haque said that 10 members of the third gender have been arrested in this incident. A case has been filed against them.
