Govt to buy Tk 489cr soybean oil, wheat, lentils

The government has decided to procure 160 lakh litres of soybean oil and 8,000 tonnes lentils for the state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) from local markets through open tender method.

Apart from this, it also decided to buy 33.60 lakh MMBtu LNG and one lakh tonnes of MOP fertiliser to meet the growing demand of the country.

It has also been decided to buy 50,000 tonnes of wheat. The total cost will be over Tk 489.40 crore to procure the items.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday approved a total of 17 proposals with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.

Apart from this, four proposals were approved for submitting before the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

Following separate proposals from the Commerce Ministry, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will procure 160 lakh litres of soybean oil from Bashundhara Multi Food Products Limited under local open tender at a cost of Tk 254.60 crore, said Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Amin Ul Ahsan while briefing the media after the meeting.

The TCBunder the Ministry of Commerce will procure 8,000 tonnes of lentils from Arbel Bakliyat Hububat San Tic AS Kumhuriyat of Türkiye in the financial year 2023-24, he said.

A total of Tk 71.94 crore will be needed to procure the lentils.

In view of another proposal, the CCGP approved to procure 80 lakh litres of soybean oil from the local company Bashundhara Multi Food Products Limited at a cost of 127.56 crore in the financial year 2023-24 through international open tender system, Amin Ul Ahsan said.

Besides, another proposal for the purchase of soybean oil was tabled, which also get the approval by the CCGP.

As per approved proposal, TCB will buy 80 lakh litres of soybean oil from Bashundhara Multi Food Products Limited through local open tender process. It would be needed Tk 127.04 crore to purchase the oil.

Apart from this, the CCGP has also approved the proposal of the Food Directorate under the Ministry of Food for purchasing wheat. As per approved proposal, it would buy 50,000 tonnes of wheat from Singapore’s Agrocrop International Pvt Ltd.

Following two separate proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture, Amin said that Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) would procure 50,000 metric tons of MOP fertiliser under state-level agreement under the 9th lot from Canadian Commercial Corporation with around Taka 173.72 crore.

The BADC will also purchase another consignment of 50,000 metric tons of MOP fertiliser under a state-level agreement under the 10th lot from Canadian Commercial Corporation with around Taka 173.72 crore.

The Cabinet Division additional secretary said that following a proposal from the Power Division, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) would procure power from the Consortium of Ask New Energy Co. Ltd; AJ Power Co.

Ltd ATN Solutions Ltd under no electricity no payment arrangement for 20 years at the 50MW Solar Power Plant at Dimla Upazila in Nilphamari where the tariff would be Taka 10.698 kilowatt per hour with an overall amount of Taka 1,732.80 crore.

He said that, the CCGP meeting also approved a proposal from the Power Division under which the tenure of the Ashulia 33.75MW power plant, Madhabdi 24.30 MW power plant and Chandina 13.50 MW gas-fired power plant have been extended by five years.

For the extended period, the BPDB will have to purchase power from Summit Power Limited at Taka 5.65 per kilowatt hour unit with an overall amount of Taka 1,118 crore.

The CCGP meeting also approved separate proposals from the Local Government Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ministry of Shipping and Bridges Division.
