IU student commits suicide

A female student of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has ‘committed suicide’ after jumping from a six-story building in Ashulia area of Savar, on Tuesday evening.

The deceased, Nawrin Nusrat, 22, was a master’s student of IU law and land management department under 2017-18 academic session.

She was also a president of the debating society of the university and a well-known face in cultural wings on the campus.

According to Nusrat’s classmates, Nawrin and her husband, after their marriage on July 21, began to live in a rented house.

Within a few days after their marriage, disputes and misunderstanding started erupting between the two.

On Tuesday, Nusrat locked in an altercation with her husband and, at one stage, she jumped off the 6th floor of the house and received critical injuries.

Later, local people rescued Nusrat and took her to local clinic where the on-duty doctors declared her died.

On information, a team of the police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

Ashulia Police Station Officer- in-Charge (OC) Kamruzzaman confirmed the matter to the media saying that police detained Nusrat’s husband Ibrahim Khalil for interrogation in this connection. The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for autopsy, the OC said.

In this regards, Law and Land Management department Assistant Professor Shahida Akter said that Nawrin got married on July 21 and was living in Dhaka with her husband. She might have committed suicide over family dispute.
