Three jailed for hill cutting in Sylhet

A mobile court sentenced three people for cutting hills in Sylhet city on Wednesday.

Mohammad Emran Hossain, director of Sylhet Divisional Office of Department of Environment, said that an operation was conducted in Kalibari area of Ward No. 8 of the Sylhet city at around 5 am on Wednesday.

the mobile court was conducted by the assistant director of the Sylhet district office of the Department of Environment. Badrul Huda.

Convicted Md. Bilal Mia (48) was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and fined one lakh rupees, Ali Azgar (20) and Sahanur Mia (37) were sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.

Emran Hossain, director of the Sylhet divisional office of the Department of Environment, said, “Two trucks and an excavator used for illegal dune cutting have been seized.

“At that time Bilal Mia, Ali Azgar and Sahanur were sentenced to imprisonment and fined under the Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act.”

He said that the operation of the Department of Environment against dune cutting will continue.

Sylhet District Sample Collector Haripad Chandra Das, Sylhet Divisional Office Laboratory Assistant Mr. Muhammad Shahadat Hossain and Jalalabad Police Station SI Mahbubul Karim and other policemen were present in the operation.
