The deadly dengue outbreak shows no signs of relenting as the mosquito-borne disease continue to wreak havoc across the nation, taking a heavy toll on lives and infecting a significant number of new patients every day.
In the past 24 hours, the Department of Health reported a staggering 8 deaths across the country due to dengue.
During a virtual briefing on the dengue situation on Sunday, the Director of Management Information Services (MIS) of the Department of Health, Professor Dr Md Shahadat Hossain, revealed the information.
“In the past 24-hour, there have been a total of 1,143 dengue cases reported in Dhaka city, and 1,059 cases reported outside Dhaka.
The overall number of infected individuals stands at 2,202. Among them, nine deaths have occurred in Dhaka and 1 death has occurred outside Dhaka,” he said.
Dr. Shahadat further said, “There are currently 5,100 patients under treatment in Dhaka and 3,861 outside Dhaka. The total number of patients under medical care is 8,961.”
“From January of last year until now, there have been 46,407 reported cases, out of which 37,207 have been discharged from hospitals. The total number of deaths stands at 239,” he reported.
Individuals between the ages of 11 and 50 are getting infected more frequently. In Dhaka city, the rate of dengue infection among children is higher compared to other districts, he said.
He further said that in June, we had 5,056 patients, but until now in July,
we have seen a significant increase with 38,429 reported cases. This month’s patient count has increased by more than seven times compared to the previous month.
The government and health authorities have been working tirelessly to contain the outbreak, conducting awareness campaigns, and implementing preventive measures.
However, the latest figures of rising trend of Dengue infection indicate that further concerted efforts are required to combat the relentless spread of the disease.
As the dengue outbreak continues to escalate, Professor Dr. Shahadat also emphasised the importance of early detection and seeking medical attention at the first signs of symptoms, as timely intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes.
However, with the daily toll of deaths and infections on the rise, urgent and decisive action is needed to curb the alarming surge in dengue cases and prevent further loss of lives.
