Uncontrolled price hike, low-income people hit hard in Kishoreganj

The prices of daily products including fish, meat, vegetables are increasing gradually.
The prices of ginger, garlic and onion have also increased. Prices of green chillies, ginger, potatoes and sugar remained unchanged for several weeks. The prices of most vegetables have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg in the last 10 days.
The low and middle income people have aggrieved by the skyrocketing likes in the prices of daily essential commodities in the country. The middle class people are now returning home with empty bags in the wake of the soaring price hikes.
On Friday, Kishoreganj ‘s kitchen markets visits, but the prices of green chillies, ginger, garlic, potatoes and vegetables in raw markets have not decreased. The prices of these daily commodities have been rising for the past few weeks.
The prices of tomatoes and green chillies have been steadily increasing since Eid al-Adha. To buy these two vegetables, the buyer has to pay about tk. 300 per kg depending on the market. 40 to 50 taka per kg of potato in the market. Onions are being sold at Tk 40 70 per variety.
Bitter gourd is now selling at Tk 100 to Tk 120, brinjal at Tk 80 to Tk 120, rinds at Tk 60 to Tk 70, potal at Tk 50 to 55 papaya at Tk 50 to 60 .
Besides, Chichinga is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70, Kankrol Tk 60 to 65 and Kachumukhi Tk 80/to 90 per kg. This week, the price of fresh garlic has increased by about Tk 40 per kg and is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 220.
Meanwhile, broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 180 to 190 per kg. The price of golden chicken is kept at 280 to 300 per kg. Domestic chicken is being sold at Tk 6O0 to. 700 per kg.
Going to the fish market, it was found that hilsa fish weighing 1 kg 800 grams is being sold at 2800 taka per kg. Hilsa fish weighing one and a half kg is being sold at Tk 2500 per kg. The price of Rui fish weighing two to two and a half kg is Tk -400 to 450 per kg.
Monsur Ali, who comes to the market on weekends, said that most of the products have to be bought at extra prices. Consumers are disappointed after hearing the price of daily products.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) in Kishoreganj, president Alam Sarowar Tito said, The soaring prices of food items put the low- income people into serious difficulties throughout last year -2022 and they were forced to cut back on their consumption.
Although the government has taken some food – friendly programmes for the poor those do not cover all the needy people while low – income people were also forced to compromise the quality, who fever food they were able to buy’, CAB in Kishoreganj added.
