7 killed in tragic road crash in Sylhet

At least seven people were killed and four others injured in a tragic road crash when a microbus collided head on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Bholaganj in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at Khagail on the Sylhet-Companiganj highway around 7am.

Four of the deceased were identified as Md. Kalan Mia, 35, son of one Shahjahan Mia of Islampur village in Companyganj upazila, Maulana Kazi Amir Uddin, 42, son of one late Ashadder Ali of Kalibari village of East Islampur union, microbus driver Abu Taher, 45, of Roy Bazar area of Dhaka and Md. Idris Ali, 40, of Batumara village of North Ronikhai union of Companyganj upazila.

The other deceased were from Companyganj upazila.

Sylhet Fire Service Assistant Director Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan said the accident took place at 7am when the microbus rammed the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw at Bholaganj of the upazila, leaving six people dead on the spot and four others injured.

Sylhet Additional Superintendent of Police Prabhas Kumar Singh confirmed the matter to the media. He said when the microbus (Dhaka Metro-Ch19-7462) leaving Sylhet reached in front of Piangul Kazi Kalimullah High School in Salutikar area of Gowainghat upazila around 8:30 am the front right tyre of the vehicle got punctured and it lost control.

Then it collided with a three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction, he said.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist named Abdul Hannan (45) was killed after being hit by a speeding truck at Jatrabari in the capital.

Deceased daughter Mim Akhter (12) was injured in the incident. The accident took place in Saddam Market area of Jatrabari around 1 pm on Thursday (July 20). Abdul Hannan died on the spot.
