Investigate allegation of hospital’s negligence over pilot’s death
Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Sunday asked the authorities concerned to probe whether there was any negligence in the part of the United Hospital in the death of Gulf Air pilot and US citizen Mohammad Yousef Hassan Al Hindi.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has been asked to comply with the order within 30 days. The official has also been asked to submit the report in the court within seven days of the completion of the probe.
The HC bench of Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Yousef Hassan Al Hindi’s sister Tala Elhendy Josephano.
The court also issued a rule upon the DGHS and others to show cause as to why DGHS should not be directed to investigate the role of United Hospital in the death of Yousef Hassan Al Hindi and take appropriate punitive action against the hospital upon investigation.
Barrister Saqeb Mahbub, assisted by Barrister Rafiul Islam and Advocate Tareq Bhuiyan, appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the writ petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Sk Shaifuzzaman represented the state.
Tala Elhendy said, “On 14 December 2022, my brother, Mohammad Yousef Hassan Al Hindi, a Gulf Air pilot, lost his life here in Bangladesh due to the sheer negligence of both United Hospital and Gulf Air.”
On 4 March 2023, she emailed the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) a letter, requesting for an investigation into the death of my brother due to the medical malpractice and negligence of doctors at United Hospital. On 19 March 2023, she posted the same letter to DGHS.
However, DGHS neither responded to her letters nor did they take any steps to investigate the matter.
Finally, on 6 June 2023, she filed a writ petition before a Division bench of the High Court. The HC bench held hearing on Sunday.
