BNP reveals 31-point outline
Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Thursday revealed a 31-point outline aimed of reforming the constitution and repairing the state system and ensuring economic unrestraint.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presented the 31-point outline at a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital.
The press conference organised on behalf of the National Standing Committee of the BNP.
“The current authoritarian government has destroyed the state structure of Bangladesh in many ways. This state needs to be repaired and rebuilt,” BNP Secretary General said.
He said as a responsible political party they prepared the outlines through discussions with the other like-minded political parties who are carrying out simultaneous movements with the BNP. He said that he has presented the outlines before the nation on behalf of the BNP.
Mirza Fakhrul said they announced a one-point demand from their Wednesday’s Dhaka rally for a historic political changeover.
“We are now announcing our 31-point outline, for overall qualitative change in the state system and turning the country into a democratic state in the true sense,” the BNP leader said.
BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Selima Rahman were present at the press conference.
The important points of the outlines are:
1. The constitution will be reviewed and revised to change the centralised, undemocratic power structure and undemocratic and controversial amendments brought by the Awami League government.
2. An ‘Electoral Non-Partisan Interim Govern-ment’ system will be introduced with a view to establishing voting rights and democracy in Bangladesh and giving permanent constitutional and institutional forms to the transparent democratic procedure.
3. No one will serve as president or prime minister for more than two consecutive terms.
4. Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022 will be revised to form an effective Election Commission consisting of independent, efficient, impartial and acceptable persons.
5. Local government institutions will be made more independent, stronger and empowered with budget formulation and tax collection powers, with decentralisation in view.
