‘This illicit govt must step down’

Sylhet Bureau :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the country has reached a critical juncture of histroy where its independence, sovereignty, and existence may be determined within the next few months.

“The fresh programme of restoring democracy will be announced from a rally in Dhaka on 12 July. The current government is illegitimate and it must step down,” the BNP secretary general said while speaking as the chief guest at the youth rally on Alia Madrasa ground in Chowhatta area of Sylhet city on Sunday.

He called on the people of the country to attend the Dhaka rally and unite in support of democracy.

Fakhrul questioned the Awami League’s claim of conducting elections in accordance with the constitution and blasted the party for amending the constitution as per their wishes.

He also emphasised the need for a non-partisan and neutral caretaker government, as established in 1996, lamenting the current state of people’s inability to cast their vote.

He highlighted the sacrifices made by many individuals who were killed or injured while advocating for these concerns.

He said, There will be no further elections in the country under the Awami League government. This government must resign. Elections should be held under a neutral non-partisan government.

Fakhrul said, “Awami League says that the election will be held according to the constitution.

But which constitution? The constitution that Awami League amended at their sweet will. They want to hold elections according to that constitution. But the people of Bangladesh have already decided that the elections will be held under a non-partisan government.”
