The situation of dengue across Bangladesh is worsening day by day as 57 districts out 64 have already been affected by the endemic while the highest six more patients died in 24 hours till this morning .
In the last 24 hours, 836 new dengue patients have been admitted to various hospitals across the country. Of them, 516 patients have been admitted to various hospitals in Dhaka and the rest at various hospitals outside Dhaka.
Seventeen dengue patients died between July 1 and 8 while the total deaths from dengue reached 67 so far.
Meanwhile, political leaders urged the government to introduce free dengue tests both at public and private hospitals across the country.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Sunday said that people in 57 districts across the country have been affected by dengue. Of these, 60 percent of the patients are in Dhaka, while the remaining patients are in various districts.
“Dengue situation has deteriorated this year as it was not so bad at this time last year. Dengue cases may increase in the next two months. So, we all need to be vigilant in such situations. People who have been infected with dengue once have a significantly higher risk of death if they are infected again. The health department is ready to deal with this situation as the country have experienced nurses and physicians,” the Health Minister said.
Jatiya Party Chairman and Deputy Leader of Opposition Ghulam Muhammad Quader said that the situation of dengue across Bangladesh is worsening day by day, so the government and private hospitals should ensure free dengue tests and treatment with government assistance.
Besides, action should be taken against those responsible persons who cannot control the dengue situation due to failure and lack of coordination. If there is evidence of corruption, action should be taken against them, he added.
In a statement, the Jatiya Party chairman quoted the media as saying that 820 patients were admitted to the hospital
with dengue in one day on Saturday.
This is the highest in terms of numbers this year.
Official data showed that 67 people died of dengue since July 8. But, people think this number is quite high.
According to the data, 2, 502 dengue patients, including 1, 773 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
So far, the DGHS has recorded 12, 118 dengue cases, 9, 549 recoveries. Last year 281 patients died due to dengue.
Ghulam Muhammad Quader said that there was no effective action from the government to tackle the dengue outbreak.
Besides, doubts have created among the common people about the efficacy of the insecticidewhich is spreading to eradicate aedes mosquitoes responsible for spreading dengue.
If the dengue situation is not controlled now, its consequences will become more dire in future, he mentioned.
The people of the country are already in dire straits due to rising commodity prices. Therefore free dengue testing and treatment should be ensured, GM Quader emphasized.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), as of July 9, as many as 3,870 dengue cases were reported while total figure stood at 12,954, this year from January 1 to till date.
