Ex-DMP chief Habib sentenced to death

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Sunday sentenced three former police officials, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death for crimes against humanity in connection with the killing of two people and the shooting of two others during
the July 2024 uprising in Rampura.

The other two condemned convicts are former Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Khilgaon Zone, Rashedul Islam, and former Officer-in-Charge of Rampura Police Station, Mashiur Rahman.

The tribunal also sentenced former Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment, while Chanchal Chandra Sarkar received a 20-year prison term in the same case.

Of the five convicted, only Chanchal Chandra Sarkar is currently in custody. The remaining four are absconding.

Formal charges against the accused were submitted on 6 August last year.
Habibur Rahman had previously been sentenced to death in a separate crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Dhaka’s Chankharpul on 5 August 2024.

According to the prosecution, the accused faced charges under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, complicity, facilitation, abetment, incitement, failure to prevent or punish crimes, and command responsibility.

Prosecutors said six-year-old Musa was critically injured after being shot during police action on 19 July 2024.

The bullet allegedly passed through the child and fatally struck his grandmother, Maya Islam.

Musa survived after receiving medical treatment, while Maya later died from her injuries.

Another victim, Md Nadim, was also killed in the same incident, according to the prosecution.

The case also included a separate incident on the same day involving 18-year-old Amir Hossain.

A video widely circulated on social media appeared to show the teenager hanging from the ledge of an under-construction building while two police officers fired at him from close range as he clung to the structure.

The footage formed part of the prosecution’s case before the tribunal.
