Sholakia militant attack till haunts locals

The people of Kishoreganj could not forget the horror caused by the brutal militant attack on an Eid jamaat at Sholakia that shook the entire country on July 8, 2016. At least four people, including two police constables, were killed and six others injured in the gruesome attack.

Despite passage of long seven years, trial in the case has not yet started. As a result, dispensation of justice in the matter is stuck.

Recollecting the horror locals said, “Sounds of bullets and bombs still come to our ears. We cannot forget the panic that gripped all of us.”

People of Kishoreganj have been demanding justice against the accused. Police Super ( SP) in Kishoreganj Mohammad Rasel Sheikh PPM (Bar) told the New Nation that the chargesheet was submitted to the court.

Five accused are currently in jail. They were also found to be involved in the attack on the Holy Artisan restaurant in Dhaka and others part of the country.

He said, “the case against them is pending. Since this is an important sensitive case, we are monitoring it very seriously. We expect that every accused in this case should get maximum punishment.”

The Public Procecutor(PP)Advocate Abu Naser Farooq said, “the police have field a chargesheet after investigation into the Sholakia attack.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Kishoreganj, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Police Super (SP) Mohammad Rasel Sheikh PMM (Bar),CS Dr.Saiful Islam, Mayor Pervez Miah have paid homage to the memory of victims with placing flowers at the Azim Uddin High School intersection in the town.

Later, prayers were offered seeking eternal peace of the souls of the deceased.

Among others, ADM Kazi Mohua Momtaj, Additional SP (DSB) Noor Alam, Additional SP (Admin,& Finsnce)MustaqueSarker, Sadar Upazila Uno Mohammad Ali Siddique were also present.

It may be mentioned that on the day of Eid on July 8, 2016, militants killed two police constables Zahirul Islam and Ansarul Haque. At least six cops were injured in that attack. A housewife Jharna Bhowmik was shot dead in her house at the time of the incident.

An assailant named Abir Rahman (18) was killed on the spot in a gunfight with the police. A militant member named Shafiul Islam Don was detained while he was injured.
