Highways witness serious traffic jams ahead of Eid

Staff Reporter :
The mass exodus of people and vehicles, including buses, trucks, microbuses, and motorcycles, has resulted in significant traffic congestion on the national highways leading out of Dhaka, particularly the Dhaka-Tangail route.
Hundreds and thousands of holidaymakers have embarked on their journey from the capital city of Dhaka, as they make their way to their hometowns to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their families and loved ones.

The high volume of vehicles departing the capital has led to extensive traffic jams at all the exit points including Mirpur’s Technical intersections, Uttara’s House building and Ittefaq Mor causing severe difficulties for travelers. Commuters, laden with their luggage, have been compelled to navigate the congested roads on foot in an attempt to catch their means of transportation.
The capital city grappled with heavy traffic congestion

as a consequence of the increasing number of vehicles departing for Eid celebrations. Passengers had found themselves confined within buses for hours on end, struggling to traverse the city limits. The gridlock on the roads has caused significant delays, adding to the frustrations of those eager to join their families for the festive occasion.
Authorities are working tirelessly to manage the situation and ensure a smooth flow of traffic. Traffic police and law enforcement personnel have been deployed at key points along the highways to alleviate the congestion and assist stranded travelers. Efforts are underway to streamline the movement of vehicles and provide guidance to motorists, although the sheer volume of holidaymakers has posed a considerable challenge.

Due to huge traffic, the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway was experiencing increased vehicular pressure. From Elenga to Bangabandhu Bridge, a stretch of 13 kilometers, there were instances of slow-moving traffic and normal vehicle movement. However, from 2 PM onwards, the traffic situation in the Gol Chattar area returned to normal.
Nevertheless, from around 3 PM, there was a long queue of vehicles spanning approximately six kilometers from Elenga to Hatia Bazar. Transportation was running smoothly from Chandara to Elenga.
According to the Bangabandhu Bridge Authority, from Monday night at 12 AM until Tuesday morning at 8 AM, a total of 15,736 vehicles, including buses, trucks, pickups, microbuses, private cars, and motorcycles, dad crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge. Toll collection during this period amounted to Tk one crore 19 lakh 65 thousand.
However, some individuals who were unable to find public transport have resorted to open pickups and trucks to return home. They have been occasionally affected by rainfall. Although the vehicles had provisions for plastic covers, they still got wet.
