Tolerating rigged election and human rights violation is our national shame
Editorial Desk :
Now Amnesty International has urged the United Nations not to take human rights violators in security forces of Bangladesh for deployment in the UN Peacekeeping Missions. Earlier the US government issued visa cancellation policy against those who will be found causing impediment on way to holding free election in Bangladesh.
These steps are exposing the inability of our educated people to stop such grave crimes of election rigging to deny the people of their right to elect the people’s government.
Where educated people are active about ensuring democracy to work, it is unthinkable to form the government through openly rigged election and boastfully claim themselves to be the elected government of the people. This is an insult for the whole nation. The silence of our educated people is the source of courage of such government.
Our servile attitude and pathetic opportunism the general people are paying heavily in terms of endemic poverty and injustices of arbitrary abuse of government power.
Not only that, our people are victims of secret killing by the government agencies but our educated ones have no anxiety. It is not denied that individually few of them protest. On vital issues like constitutional legitimacy of the government and violations of human rights our educated section cannot shun their responsibility. As a result any incompetent person thinks he or she can run the government.
Everyone will agree that secret killing and forced disappearance are anti-people dangerous criminal activities. Our people were not used to accept such criminal activities as politics. The politics is thus criminalised.
The politics of secret killing and forced disappearance was not our politics and the blueprint of which must have come from outside.
The US policy of visa cancellation impacted on Bangladesh politics in a positive way. The people’s expectation is high to see the end of fraudulent election victory and the end of this repressive government.
The Amnesty International urged the United Nations not to take anybody for the deployment in the Peacekeeping Mission from law enforcing agency and security forces of Bangladesh. This move is also welcome for safety of the people.
In criminal cases sending the accused to police custody has become a regular feature and deaths in police custody go unaccounted for. The law requires that he should be interrogated in the presence of his lawyer. Despite the insistence of the Supreme Court the lawyer’s presence is avoided.
The government was too sure of itself knowing that all sections of the state machinery have been corrupted so in their own interest they will work for the success of election rigging to save the government. The government does not have that complacency after issuing the visa cancellation policy by the US government.
How to protect the huge amounts of money accumulated through corruption and extortion and kept in foreign countries for safety and secrecy is also a matter of great anxiety. The ministers and others enjoyed protection for looting the country. They are having sleepless nights because of American visa cancellation policy.
The Awami League government is mortally scared to face the people in a free election. In the absence of political leadership how the government will cope with the crisis remains uncertain.
