Court issues travel ban on Alesha Mart chairman and 3 others

A Dhaka Court on Wednesday issued a travel ban on Alesha Mart Chairman Manjurul Alam Sikder and three others in a case. The three others are-Manjurul’s wife Sadia Chowdhury, Md Al Mamun, the owner of SK Traders, and Abul Kashem, the Chairman of the proposed People’s Bank Ltd.
It also directed authorities concerned to freeze all immovable properties of scam-hit e-commerce platform Alesha Mart.
Judge of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka, Md Asaduzzaman, passed the order after hearing a case filed with Banani Police Station over laundering Tk 4.21 billion collected from the customers.
Additional Public Prosecutor Taposh Kumar Paul said the court has ordered to confiscate all the immovable properties of the Alesha Mart and issued a travel ban on its chairman and three others. He said that these properties are in Gazipur.
The lawyer said, according to the CID report, Tk 4.21 billion was withdrawn from four bank accounts of Alesha Mart in four private banks.
Earlier in the day, Md Moniruzzaman, an Inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application with the court in this connection.
In the petition, the IO said that following the case, there is a chance that Manjurul and three others might leave the country to avoid arrest.
The judge also directed the police authorities to send the order sheet to the Chief of the Special Branch (immigration) to take further steps in this regard.
On May 16, CID’s Assistant Superintendent of Police Al Mamun filed a case against them with Banani Police Station.
Earlier on January 21 this year, a Dhaka court issued arrest warrant against Alesha Mart Chairman Manjurul Alam Sikder in a case filed over cheque dishonour.
