Bangladesh take the upper hand on the second day of the first Test against Afghanistan as Bangladesh have 370-run lead at the close of the second day play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Thursday.
Bangladesh piled up a mammoth total of 382 in the first innings on the second day.
In reply, Afghanistan were shot out for 146 in the first innings on the second day.
Bangladesh were at the stumps at 134 for the loss of one wicket.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 362 for the loss of five wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 41 and 43 runs respectively.
But Miraz could able to add more five runs on the second day as he (48) was caught at the backward point by Amir Hamza off Yamin Ahmadzai when Bangladesh’s score was 373 for the loss of seven wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim could capable to add more six runs as he (47) was caught at the slip by Nasir Jamal off Nijat Masood when the hosts’ total was 375 for the loss of seven wickets.
Seventh-down Taijul Islam (0) was caught at the short leg by Abdul Malik off Nijat Masood when the home side’s score was 375 for the loss of eight wickets.
Sixth-down Taskin Ahmed (2) was trapped leg before wicket by Yamin Ahmadzai when Bangladesh’s total was 377 for the loss of nine wickets.
Shoriful Islam (6) was bowled out by Nijat Masood when the Tigers’ innings came to an end.
Debutante Nijat Masood captured five wickets in the space of 79 runs, while Yamin Ahmadzai bagged two wickets at the cost of 39 runs.
Later, Nasir Jamal and Afsar Zazai could build the only notable partnership for the tourists’. They put on together 65 runs in the five-wicket stand before Nasir Jamal (35) was trapped leg before wicket by Mehidy Hasan Miraz when Afghanistan’s total was 116 for the loss of five wickets.
After Nasir’s dismissal, Afsar Zazai could stay at the crease for a short period as he (36) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Litton Das off Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the visitors’ score was 116 for the loss of six wickets. It was Miraz’s 150th Test wicket. Miraz is the third Bangladesh bowler who picked up 150 wickets in Test cricket.
The batters of the touring side totally failed to face Bangladesh bowling attack.
Promising pacer Ebadot Hossain played the key role in wrecking Afghanistan’s first innings. Ebadot Hossain picked up four wickets at the cost of 47 runs, while Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shoriful Islam bagged two wickets each for seven, 15 and 28 runs respectively.
Then, opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (17) was caught at the first slip by Ibrahim Zadran off Amir Hamza when Bangladesh’s score was 18 for the loss of one wicket.
After Joy’s departure, Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto repaired the damage contributing together 116 runs for the second wicket partnership before the two umpires pocketed the bails for the second day.
Zakir Hasan remained unbeaten with 54 runs, while Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unbeaten with 54 runs.
Zakr Hasan hit six fours in his 64-ball innings. It is Zakir’s second half-century in Test cricket.
Najmul Hossain Shanto struck eight boundaries in his 64-ball knock. It is Shanto’s fourth half-century in his Test campaign.
Amir Hamza took one wicket for 27 runs.
