Qatar Charity’s (QC) Mosque Project brings comfort and tranquility to the worshippers in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country in South Asia. It has built 600 eye-catching mosques in the last five years in the country which benefit more than 150,000 devotees.

There are available mosques in every corner of the country, but most of them are not comfortable and environmentally sound due to the dilapidated and poor conditions. The locals of the rural areas are also unable to undertake the construction of a comfortable mosque on their own cost for the financial difficulties.

Addressing the issue, Qatar Charity, with the support of philanthropists in Qatar, has been working to enable the place of the mosque for prayer as a part of its ‘Cultural and Religious Program.’ Qatar Charity grants financial support to build a mosque by receiving a proper application from the local communities which is recommended by local government officials.

The design of the QC’s mosques, measuring 80 to 300 sq m, is quite spectacular. Each mosque has an arrangement for 200 to 600 worshippers to pray together. The inside of the mosques are so spacious and decorated with standard equipment. In addition, there is a well-equipped toilet and ablution facilities.

During a recent visit to three such project areas in Gazipur District, near the capital, it was seen that the local people are excited about such services of the Qatar Charity. They thanked QC and its patrons for providing financial support to restructure their dilapidated mosques.

The construction work of ‘Baldha Jame Mosque’ in Gazipur Sadar Upazila was completed just before the Corona pandemic. A large primary school playground is next door. Various tournaments are organized throughout the year in this one of the biggest fields of the district. Those who pray among them used to suffer a lot to pray in the dilapidated mosque here.

Moulana Belal Hossain, President of the ‘Baldha Jame Mosque’ Committee, said, “The mosque in our village was old and dilapidated and it was made of tin. It was difficult for us to pray, especially in the rainy season. Thanks to the Qatar Charity for helping us to build the new mosque.”

Shukur Ali, Secretary of the “Kalni Mosque” Committee in the Sadar upazila, and Jamal Palawan, a worshipper of the Kalni mosque, shared the same expression.

They said that they use to come to this mosque for prayer for a long time. Earlier when the mosque was dilapidated, water fell on them during the rain. There was no good bathroom or ablution system. Now all the shortages have been removed. The mosque also enhanced the reputation of the area.

Md Sohel Alam, Project Director of Qatar Charity, said, “As Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country, the mosque project of Qatar Charity has been considered a very popular project. In the last five years, Qatar Charity built at least 600 mosques across the country that benefitted 150,000 devotees to perform their prayer in a peaceful atmosphere.”
