Mayor Taposh sends legal notice to Daily Star
Staff Reporter :
A legal notice has been sent to the Editor, Executive Editor and a reporter of The Daily Star demanding compensation of Tk 1 billion for publishing a report over cutting trees in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh, Mayor of the DSCC, sent the notice on June 5 through his lawyer Barrister Mejbahur Rahman.
The notice sender warned that if the notice receivers fail to pay the compensation within seven days he will move before an appropriate court.
Daily Star published the report on May 13 this year under the banner of “Cutting trees to make way for air”.
Barrister Mejbahur said in the legal notice that it was a fictitious story with a language which is highly offensive, provocative, false, fabricated, baseless and grossly defamatory to the dignity of the notice giver and his institution.
In the published report Daily Star mentioned Dhaka South City Corporation as ‘Dhoka South Town Corporation’ and in some places name of the DSCC Mayor was mentioned as ‘Faposh Dhur’, according to the legal notice.
The Daily Star in a statement said, “A press conference was held today (Wednesday) about a legal notice served on The Daily Star on a satirical article published on May 13, 2023.
In response, we want to state that we have indeed received the said legal notice dated June 5, 2023, from the Lex Counsel late in the evening of June 6, 2023, and it allows us only 2 days to respond. We will publish our response within that time.
