4 Jamaat leaders held at DMP headquarters

Police arrested four leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from the main gate of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters when they went there to seek permission for holding a protest rally in the capital.

DMP deputy commissioner (media and public relations) Faruk Hossain confirmed the matter to the media on Monday evening.

The four arrested leaders have been identified as Saifur Rahman, former assistant secretary of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association; Golam Rahman, former vice president of the SC Bar Association; Abdul Baten, former senior vice president of the SC Bar Association, and Jalal Uddin Bhuyian, former senior vice president of the SC Bar Association, according to a press release issued by the party.

In this regard, Jamaat’s Dhaka city south publicity and media wing director Ashraful Alam Emon told the media that Jamaat would bring out a protest procession from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on 5 June protesting price hike of essentials and demanding the release of Jamaat ameer and formation of a caretaker government.

As the part of initiative, a delegation of Jamaat’s Dhaka city south unit went to the DMP office to seek cooperation on holding the programme on Monday. But police arrested the delegation members from the DMP office gate and took them to the Detective Branch office, the release added.

In this issue, DMP’s Ramna division deputy commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Hossain said that the four Jamaat leaders were detained to check whether they were wanted in any case. He said that the four Jamaat leaders were released after a short time as they were not wanted in any case and that the Jamaat leaders left the DMP headquarters after submitting their letter.
