Police constable dies in Banani
Staff Reporter :
An on-duty police constable allegedly shot himself dead in a washroom of a police check post at Banani in the capital on Thursday morning.
The deceased police constable has been identified as Ashrafuzzaman Roni, resident of Mirpur Police Lines. He was working in Public Order Management (POM) South Division of ASTF Company.
Banani Police Station’s OC Md Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media saying that Roni was posted at the Banani 11 police check post since the morning. As he went to the washroom the sound of a gunshot was heard from inside.
After hearing the gunshot, his colleagues rushed in and took him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, police officials suspected that Roni may have committed suicide over troubled relationship with his girl friend. On Thursday (May 25) evening, Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Shahidullah told the media that Roni had a love affair with a girl. Because of that relationship they both used to talk on mobile most of the time.
After checking the deceased’s mobile phone, it was found that there was a problem with constable Roni’s girlfriend over a romantic matter. That is why he can commit suicide with his own pistol, DC added.
His colleagues who were on duty during the incident suspected that Rony might have killed himself but it is not yet known the reason behind his suicide. Police are investigating the incident, OC said.
