FS declares Gauchia market hazardous again

The Fire Service (FS) has declared the capital’s Gauchia supermarket hazardous gain.
On Sunday (May 21) National Intelligence Agency (NSI), Fire Service and Civil Defence, TITAS and Dhaka WASA jointly visited the market.
At the end of the inspection, the owner association was formally advised to implement 20 recommendations on an urgent basis.
Recommendations were made at a press conference organized in the office room of Gausia Market Shop Owners Association around 1:15 PM.
The recommendations are:
1. Exit signs/emergency lights should be placed on the emergency side of the stairs.
2. Emergency numbers should be placed in visible places.
3. Call-point switch must be installed.
4. Fire alarm bells should be installed.
5. Fire pump should be installed and connected to underground water tank.
6. Fire hydrant system (with risers) shall be installed for each floor.
7. Floor delivery hosepipe shall be installed (with 2.5 inch dia).
8. Water reservoir (underground) tank should be increased as per requirement.
9. PA system should be installed for each floor.
10. Fire doors should be provided for sub-station and generator room.
11. Necessary fire extinguishers (01 for every 550 square feet) should be installed.
12. Roof hatches should be kept open for all times.
13. Fire rated walls (in sub station room and generator room) should be installed and ventilation should be provided.
14. Adequate floor ventilation should be provided.
15. Fire safety system (fire suppression system) should be installed in generator and sub-station room, rubber mat should be installed and earthing of cables should be ensured.
16. Corridors, walkways should be kept clear/unblocked and stairwells should be removed.
17. Electrical lines should be checked from time to time by an authorized electrical engineer and electrical wires should be routed through specific channel boards.
18. Fire safety measures for electric heaters, electric ovens and coffee shops should be ensured.
19. Trained fire fighters should be provided with training from fire service and civil defense and drills should be arranged.
20. Building establishments must obtain a fire license on an urgent basis.
