Staff Reporter :
In the capital Dhaka’s kitchen market, per dozen eggs (farm) is being sold at Tk150 whereas before Eid it was selling at Tk130.
After Eid the price of egg was increasing gradually and in the last few days egg prices were hiked by Tk10 to Tk15 abnormally.
Along with meat and fish market, the egg price went beyond the buying capacity of middle and lower income group people putting them more pressure to ensure their source of protein.

The leaders of egg producing association said the price of egg did not rise at farm level and production didn’t fall. The price of egg has increased due to the short supply of corporate company.
The leaders also blamed the corporate and wholesale syndicate for increasing egg price.

The wholesalers have expressed different view as they are demanding there is supply shortage of egg in the market. Besides, there are huge demands of the egg in the market. As a result, supply and demand difference has made the price hike.

They said a significant number of farm have kept shut in the village level as they are counting loss resulting less supply from the village farms.
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) also finds its investigation that the egg price hiked 11 percent within one month and 25 per cent within one year. Last year at the same time per hali (four pieces) were sold at Tk 35 to Tk 42 and now at Tk 47 to Tk 50.

A customer from capital Rampura bazar said it was possible to buy per dozen eggs by spending Tk 100 in last year while now it is too difficult. Extra fare is pressuring to limited income group people to maintain their family expenditure.

Hasanuzzaman, a buyer from capital’s Badda area said buying of meat and fish is impossible for us. Previously egg was cheap and possible to buy. Now it is going beyond to buying capacity of poor people.
