DSA case against ex-SP Babul, 3 others, charge hearing Jun 8

A Dhaka court yesterday fixed June 8 for hearing on whether to accept the charge sheet or not in the Digital Security Act (DSA) case against the four accused including former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter and three others.

Judge AM Julfiquar Hayat of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order on Sunday. Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Nazrul Imam Shamim confirmed the information.

On May 11, Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order for shifting the case.
Other three accused in the case are- Babul’s father Md Abdul Wadud Mia, his brother Md Habibur Rahman Lavu and US based-Youtuber Elias Hossain.

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) presented the charge sheet before the court on May 11. Then, the court transferred the case to Dhaka Cyber Tribunal for trial. On April 09, Dhanmondi Model Police Station Inspector (Operation) Md. Rabiul Islam, also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against four people including Babul Akter and Ilias Hossain.

The Investigation Officer of the case submitted a petition to issue an arrest warrant against Ilias Hossain as he is absconding.
According to the case statement, Elias in association with Babul Aktar leaked an audio on his Facebook page and Youtube channel from the US about Babul’s wife Mitu murder. In the video, he alleged that Police Bureau of Investigation Chief (PBI) Chief had intentionally implicated Babul in the case and the latter was tortured in custody.

On September 27, last year, Banaj Kumar Majumdar filed the case bringing the allegations under the DSA and the Special Power Act with Dhanmondi Police Station.S Later, Babul was shown arrested in the case on November 10 of the same year. The four accused were acquitted of the charges under Special Power Act (SPA) as the allegations against them under the SPA could not be proved.
