Saidul Islam, a home teacher, hacked student Rabeya Akhter to death knowing that she would be sent abroad for higher education.
Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director of RAB’s law and media wing, gave this information at a press conference at RAB’s media center in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Thursday noon (May 11). He said that the elite force RAB arrested Saidul Islam, a home teacher, from Bhuyapur of Tangail in connection with the murder of college student Rabeya Akhtar in the South Salna area of Gazipur city.
Saidul became enraged and planned to kill the student after learning of the plan to send the student abroad for higher education. For this reason, in the afternoon of May 7, he bought a knife for Tk 650 and entered the victim’s house and hacked the victim’s head, neck, hands and feet. When the members of victim’s family came to save Rabeya, Saidul also hacked and injured Rabeya’s mother and two sisters.
Later Rabeya was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared her dead.
Khandaker Al Moin said, in the initial interrogation, Saidul said that the victim’s father hired him as a tutor to teach Arabic to everyone in the victim’s family during the Corona virus in 2020. At one point, when he developed a good relationship with the victim’s family, he proposed marriage to the victim. Teaching was stopped after six months. Saidul later verbally married the victim in December 2020.
Killer Saidul pressured the victim and her family to make marriage socially acceptable.
In October 2022, the girl’s family came to know and filed a complaint against Saidul for molesting her. Saidul stopped being harassed for some time, but for the last two months, he had been threatening to kill the victim on the way to and from the college and home.
Arrested Saidul passed Daura from a madrasa in Chattogram and used to teach in a madrasa in Gazipur. In addition, he used to lead the local mosque as a Imam and gave private lessons in different houses of the area.
He quit both jobs two months ago. After the incident, he changed his appearance to evade the eyes of the law enforcement agencies and went into hiding at his friend’s house in Tangail’s Bhuyapur. RAB arrested him while in hiding.
