GCC polls acid test for EC: CEC

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kazi Habibul Awal, has said Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) is very important for them.

Showing causes he said parliamentary polls is knocking at the door. Before that like GCC, considering as a big election will be impacted jatiya sangsad election which is going to be held end of the year or first quarter of the next year.

The CEC said GCC is seemed as an acid test for Election Commission (EC). We will try our best to organize free, fair and participatory polls.

He said this while meet with the candidates of the GCC polls in a view exchange programme at Shahid Ahasan Ullah Master Stadium in Rajbari road area on Wednesday as the chief guest. The meeting was chaired by GCC returning officer Md Faridul Islam.

Kazi Habibul Awal said our development partners such as UK, USA, Japan, the United Nations (UN) have talked over our political system. They can do it as we are living in a global world. It is impossible to solve all problems by EC in a single hand. So, everybody have responsibility to join to organize impartial and acceptable polls.

If we follow the electoral code of conduct and abide by rules and regulation then all evil power will destroy and would not able to make obstacle in polls, he continued.

The CEC said the whole world is eagerly looking to the election system of the Bangladesh as well as Bangladeshi people also. So, the GCC polls is considering as a heavyweight election to the EC.

From the side of EC, we will try our best with limitation to organize the GCC polls in a festive and participatory manner, he added.
Mentioning the administration, the CEC said we would not able to hold a transparent election without the contribution of the administration’s neutrally.

Without the consensus of the candidates it is very difficult to make polls acceptable to all, he said.

Gazipur district election officer Kamrul Hasan, mayoral candidate Azmat Ulla Khan, Zayda Khatun, MM Niaz Uddin, Gazi Ataur Rahman, Sarkar Shahnur Islam, Atiqul Islam, Raju Ahmed and Harun Or Rashid, councilor candidate Shaheen Molla, also spoke at the meeting.

Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Jahangir Alam was present. Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sabirul Islam, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman, Superintendent of Police Kazi Shafiqul Alam and others were present.
