World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day observed

The Red Crescent Society Sylhet Unit organized various programs including rallies, discussions and cultural events On the occasion of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8.
The program started on Monday morning by hoisting the national flag and the Red Crescent flag at the Sylhet unit office in Sarada Hall near Keenbridge in the city.
After this, a colorful peace rally was taken out from the unit office. The rally ended at Red Crescent Matrumangal Hospital and Shishu Kalyan Kendra in Chauhatra in the city. Later at 12 noon a discussion meeting on Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was held in the hall of Red Crescent Matrumangal Hospital and Shishu Kalyan Kendra.
Presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League, former MP Syeda Jebunnesha Haque spoke as the chief guest in the programme.
Red Crescent Sylhet Unit Vice Chairman Mansuzzaman Chowdhury Babul presided over and moderated by former youth chief Md. Nazim Khan.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Management Board Member Mustak Ahmad Palash, Secretary of Sylhet Unit Md. Abdur Rahman Jamil spoke as special guests. Sylhet unit executive committee members Ferdous Chowdhury Ruhel, Swaib Ahmad, Mazir Uddin also spoke.
Among others present were Life Member Sylhet Press Club Senior Vice President MA Hannan, Principal of Red Crescent Nursing College Renoara Akhter, Dr. Mujib Jahan in charge of blood center. Abu Saleh Khan, Life Member Journalist Abdul Batin Faisal, Sylhet Unit Deputy Director Kazi Jane Alam, Life Member Aminur Rahman Pappu, Journalist Atiqur Rahman Nagri, Former Youth Leader Aminul Islam, Enamul Haque Chowdhury Suhail, PPP Project Health Supervisor Moazzem Hossain, Field Officer Abdur Rakib, Nizam Uddin, Nurul Islam Mamun, Ariful Islam Suhan. Red Crescent, Youth Red Crescent members, officials of Red Crescent Matrumangal Hospital, along with Yuva Pradhan Palash Gun, gave welcome speech in the discussion meeting. Later, awards were given and cultural program was held.
BSS from Gaibandha reports : The World Red Cross Day or Red Crescent Day-2023 was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country and the globe Monday with the theme “Everything we do comes from the heart”.
Marking the day, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), district unit chalked out elaborate programmes like hoisting of national and organisational
flags, bringing out rally, art competition, award distribution to the ex-youth chiefs and prize disbursement.
Apart from it, a discussion meeting was also held on the importance of the day at the auditorium of Public Library and Club of the town around 11 am with Chairman of BDRCS, district unit, Abu Bakar Siddique in the chair. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Oliur Rahman addressed the function as the chief guest while Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamal Hossain was present as special guest.
Secretary of BDRCS, district unit Mridul Mostafi Jhantu moderated the function.
The speakers said World Red Cross and Red Crescent Society is providing relief to the human beings in distress and desolation due to war, food shortage, epidemic diseases or natural calamities.
The World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year commemorating the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who was born in Geneva of Switzerland on May 8
in 1828, the DC said, adding: “He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) which was formed in 1863 and since then, the ICRC had been working globally following seven fundamental principles-humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.”
BSS from Narail adds: The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day-2023 was celebrated Monday in the district as elsewhere in the country and the globe.
This year’s theme was ‘We do everything sincerely’. This day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8 each year. The date is the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant (born on 8th May 1828), the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
To commemorate this great man with reverence, his birthday is celebrated all over the world every year as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
