Gang kidnapped 300 children in 6 years: 3 held

Staff Reporter  :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Uttara Division DC Mohammad Morshed Alam said that a gang in the capital’s Uttara area has kidnapped at least 300 children in 6 long years. So far they were out of touch.

He said these things at a press conference held at DMP’s media center on Saturday (May 6) at noon.

Mohammad Morshed Alam said, we have arrested the masterminds and associates of this gang. The arrested persons have been identified as Milton Masud (45), Shahinur Rahman (38), and Sufia Begum (48).

They have been carrying out this act of child abduction for six years. The gang has been kidnapping various children for a long time. They targeted those between the ages of 8 and 16.

Apart from this, those who did not have a mobile phone but had their parents’ phone numbers memorized were also targeted.

DC said that the police recently received a complaint of abducting children and demanding extortion from the Uttara East police station. Based on the complaint an investigation started. We got significant information from them. Shaheen and Sufia assisted the gang. The gang has so far targeted 500 to 600 children. They abducted more than 300 children from that target and extorted money from the parents. The amount of this extortion has increased from 500 taka to 50 thousand taka in some cases.

DC Mohammad Morshed Alam also said that the pattern of their abduction is different. They normally maintain good relation with children. It was just a trick. The circle first builds rapport with the children.

The abductor pretended to be known to their parents. Then they would lure the child and ask them to come to any place of their choice. When the child went there, they detained children and called the parents to extort money from 500 to 50,000 taka. Legal action will be taken against them, DC added.
