Since the news of his passing, people from all walks of life have been expressing their love and respect for the founder of Gonoshasthya Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury on various online and offline platforms.
In a bid to pay tribute, his mortal remains will be kept at the National Shaheed Minar on Thursday, Prof Altafunnessa Maya, Chairman of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Trust, told the media at the Gonoshasthaya Kendra in the capital on Thursday.
The arrangement will be between 10am and 1pm, followed by a state guard of honour, she added.
Apart from this, the first Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan at 2:30pm. His body will be taken to Gonoshasthaya Kendra in Savar at 10 am on Friday. His second Namaz-e-Janaza will be held there after Jummah prayers following an event to pay tribute to the freedom fighter. About the donation or burial of the mortal remains, she said, “His family members will decide it.”
“So far I know, most of our family members support his decision to donate the body. He told us several times to donate his body. We would like to respect his wishes,” Zafrullah’s younger sister Aleya Chowdhury said.
The press conference was attended, among others, by Zafrullah’s friend freedom fighter Istaf Aziz, Convener of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gonoshasthya Kendra Trustee Nazim Uddin, Prof Asif Nazrul, Convener of Bhashani Anushari Parishad Rafiqul Islam Bablu and Vice-Chancellor of Gonobishyabidyalaya Abul Hossain.
Dr Chowdhury’s contributions to the healthcare system in Bangladesh are immeasurable, and his passing has left a void that will be hard to fill.
However, the outpouring of love and respect from the people of Bangladesh is a testament to his legacy, and he will always be remembered as a true hero of the nation.
Apart from this, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, opposition leader in Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad and Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader, and other political party leaders including former President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury expressed their condolences.
In addition to political party leaders, various ministers and state ministers of different ministries issued their messages of condolence for the departed soul of Dr Zafrullah. Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury expressed their condolences, among others.
