BNP to avoid govt’s trap set up for five city polls: Fakhrul
Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the government’s plan to hold elections for five city corporations by June this year is a trap, stating that their party will not fall into it.
“The people will not fall into any trap of the government, and the BNP will not fall into any
trap either. Our statement is clear; we are not falling into any trap. We will turn their trap around,” he said.
The Secretary General of BNP went to see a leader from Natore who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital on Monday.
When asked by journalists about the party’s participation in the upcoming elections for five city corporations, he said they want to find out more information before making a decision.
Pointing out the 10-point demand, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Our movement is one, it is to ensure that there will be no national elections under this government and no elections without a caretaker government government. We have already rejected the local government elections…you know”.
In reply to a query what action will be taken if any of the BNP leaders participate in election independently, he said, “I have already answered it”.
Commenting on the arrest of Nafiz Mohammad Alam for giving interview to Deutsche Welle, he said, “It proves that RAB is involved in unconstitutional events. Attempts are being made to silence those who are trying to speak. This responsibility lies not only with RAB but primarily with the government”.
BNP Secretary General was flanked by Member of BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council Member Prof Abdul Quddus and Organising Secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukder. During a recent meeting, the Election Commission made the decision to schedule elections for five city corporations — Barishal, Gazipur, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet — to be held between May 23 and June 29.
