A five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam powered Bangladesh to dismiss Ireland for 214 in the first innings on the first day of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday.
In reply, Bangladesh were stumps at 34 for the loss of two wickets.
Bangladesh trailed by 180 runs in the first innings.
Taijul Islam bowled extremely well and finished his superb spell as 28-10-58-5.
Pacer Shoriful Islam gave his team early breakthrough as opener Murray Commins (5) was trapped leg before wicket by Bangladesh pacer when the visitors’ total was 11.
Opener James McCollum (15) was caught at the slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Ebadot Hossain when the tourists’ score was 27 for the loss of two wickets.
Taijul Islam struck as one-down Andy Balbirnie (16) was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner when Ireland’s total was 48 for the loss of three wickets.
Second-down Harry Tector and third-down Curtis Campher repaired the damage adding together 74 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Tector was cleanly bowled out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the touring side’s score was 122 for the loss of four wickets.
Tector notched up a patient 50. His 92-ball innings had six fours and a sixer.
Fourth-down Peter Moor (1) was caught at the mid-off by Tamim Iqbal off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ total was 123 for the loss of five wickets.
Taijul struck again as Campher was trapped leg before wicket by the left-arm spinner when Ireland’s score was 124 for the loss of six wickets.
Campher scored 34 from 73 deliveries including six fours.
Fifth-down Lorcan Tucker and sixth-down Andy McBrine built a notable partnership. They put on together 35 runs in the seven-wicket stand before Andy (19) was caught at the square leg by Mominul Haque off Ebadot Hossain when the touring side’s total was 159 for the loss of seven wickets.
Tucker and Mark Adair made a valuable partnership. They scored together 40 runs in the eighth wicket stand before Tucker was stumped out by wicketkeeper Litton Das off Taijul Islam when Ireland’s score was 199 for the loss of eight wickets.
Tucker made 37 from 74 balls featuring three fours.
Taijul struck again as Adair (32) was trapped leg before wicket by the left-arm spinner when the tourists’ total was 214 for the loss of nine wickets.
Number-10 batter Graham Hume (2) was bowled out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz when Ireland’s innings was concluded.
Miraz and Ebadot bagged a pair of wickets each for 43 and 54 runs respectively.
Bangladesh had a sorrow start as opener Najumul Hossain Shanto (0) was bowled out by Adair when Bangladesh’s score was just two.
Opener Tamim Iqbal (21) was caught at the slip by Adair off Andy McBrine when Bangladesh’s score was 34 for the loss of two wickets.
Mominul Haque remained unbeaten with 12 runs.
Adair and McBrine took one wicket apiece.
