Allegations of irregularity in 24 no ward Nikah registrar recruitment

Irregularities have been reported in the appointment of Nikah Registrar of Ward No. 24 of Sylhet City Corporation. Complaints have already been filed demanding legal action against appointed Kazi Md. Abdul Jalil Khan through proper and impartial investigation. Md Arsh Ali, son of Sonafar Ali, a resident of SCC Ward No. 23, sent separate complaints to the Inspector General of Registrar, Divisional Commissioner Sylhet, Deputy Commissioner Sylhet, Chairman, Anti-Corruption Commission and Justice Branch 7 of the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs on February 2.
According to the complaint, Md. Abdul Jalil Khan, son of deceased Firoz Khan of Salon Khan Bari village of Rajnagar Police Station, Moulvibazar District, was appointed as the Nikah Registrar of Ward No. 24 of CCKR on February 15, 2006 through a fake citizenship certificate.
After the death of Shibbir Hasan Chowdhury, Nikah Registrar, Ward No. 23, Jalil Khan got additional charge as Nikah Registrar of Ward No-23.
After his illegal activities, he was relieved of additional duties at some point.
Jalil Khan filed a writ petition in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court challenging the order of exemption to retain his duty. On 26 August 2021, the High Court dismissed petition.
Md Arsh Ali in his complain said that Jalil Khan has no residence of his own in the city even though he was illegally appointed as a Nikah registrar by making himself a resident of Ward No 24.
Jalil Khan is continuing his activities by ignoring the prevailing laws.
Following Arsh Ali’s complaint, Companiganj Upazila Sub-Registrar Md Akhlakur Rahman was given the responsibility of investigation by order of Sylhet District Registrar. A hearing was held on March 9 at Sylhet district registrar’s office.
While talking about this matter, Ward No. 23 Councilor Mostak Ahmad said that Abdul Jalil Khan, who has been temporarily in charge, has filed a writ petition to extend his tenure.
There is no Nikah registrar in this ward. He urged the authorities concerned to appoint Nikah registrar on urgent basis in this ward.
District Registrar Sylhet Tarek Aziz said, based on the complaint, Companiganj sub registrar has been given the responsibility of investigation. The matter is still under investigation.
