‘EVM reliable, no complaints’

News Desk :
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Saturday said no one has yet made a sound and objective complaint about the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and that the commission has the capacity to hold polls in 50 to 80 constituencies in the general election with the EVMs it has now.
“The Election Commission is always in favour of conducting elections using EVMs. We are also working to find innovative modern technology for future elections,” he said while addressing the opening ceremony of a daylong workshop in Cox’s Bazar as chief guest.
Kazi Habibul Awal said the main objective of the commission is to give voters the chance to exercise their franchise.
“The Election Commission is not concerned about who are the voters and which party they vote for.”
“If voters cannot vote, if they are prevented from voting, if their rights are infringed upon at polling stations, we will have to take responsibility for our failure along with all authorities concerned,” he added.
The chief election commissioner further said the commission has taken a stand in favour of EVMs after conducting several tests.
“So far, there has been no objective complaint about rigged elections using EVMs,” he said.
Election Commission and senior administration officials, police personnel, representatives of the civil society, new voters, public representatives and freedom fighters, among others, participated in the workshop.
