Govt officers will be risking jobs for not ensuring election victory of the government

– Mainul Hosein :
The government has so amended the Constitution that the government officials will be under tremendous pressure to ensure election victory for the sitting government and cooperate in wining every time. During the election, even the parliament will not be dissolved. The government does not want to take any chances, it will be in power for three months after the general election to punish any deviation.
As part of the vicious plan the Constitution has been changed to annul the requirement of government officials to remain neutral and free as in a democracy. The Constitution has been amended so that the sitting government remains in power during the coming general election to keep a watch over the conduct of the government officials.
Likewise the parliament will not be dissolved for holding the general election. This arrangement is to reestablish the BAKSAL one party authoritarianism through the front door.
On the issue of amending the constitutional provision of the caretaker government, when invited, out of eight amicus curiae only one differed on the matter. The other seven advisers categorically asserted that such an amendment is in conflict with the Constitution. Still amendment was saved by a one-person majority in the Supreme Court.
There is now an acute absence of honest and experienced political leaders who can understand and say that democracy means the rule of law, independent judiciary and free and fair elections. With the election victory in the pocket, the sitting government is getting away with all the lies and anti-people activities.
The politics has become a corruption business. But in democracy a politician is a person who serves the people selflessly. He does not join politics to make himself rich and powerful personally. The election time offers the best opportunity for buying and selling in the market of corruption and looting. The sitting government distributes and decides which party will get how many seats in the parliament or not a seat at all.
Thus the greedy and corrupt ones are attracted to sabotage the people’s election and monopolise it for personal aggrandisement. No political competence is necessary for running a corruption-ridden government. The country is virtually in the hands of plunderers who are making people’s life and property unsafe and insecure.
The people are denied to choose their government. Such a government has to rely on care-free corruption and intimidation crippling all the institutions of a good government.
So BAKSAL is being brought back through the front door unlike the last time, with the open cooperation of the greedy and dishonest ones.
The politics has been converted into a hereditary business. The government is not accountable to the people as the election victory is not dependent on people’s vote.
The Election Commission at present is redundant for holding free and fair elections. If there were an honest and patriotic Election Commission, it would have now said that with the constitutional amendment brought the Commission has been constitutionally disabled to hold free and fair election.
We cannot prove ourselves unfit for protecting our rights as an independent country. It is not expected that the government should let loose violence to make violent reaction as the only option for change.
