Chargesheet filed against ex-DUCSU VP Nur under DSA

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted a charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka against former VP of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union
(DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur in a case filed for “hurting religious sentiments of Awami League activists and supporters and defaming the party with his derogatory comments”.
DB Cyber and Special Crime Division Inspector Md Saiful Islam, and also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet on February 28. In the charge sheet, Nur was shown as a “fugitive” as he did not secure bail from the court.
On Monday, CMM Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury ordered to transfer the case to Dhaka Cyber Tribunal for disposal.
General Registration Branch Officer of Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shah Alam confirmed the matter yesterday.
This is the first charge sheet that was filed in any of the 20 cases filed against Nurul Haque Nur, who is also a leader of Bangladesh Gono Odhikar Parishad.
On April 18, 2021, singer Eleyas Hossain filed the case with Paltan Police Station under the Digital Security Act for Nur’s comments during a Facebook live session on April 14 of the same year.
According to the case docket, it was alleged that Nur made false, derogatory, and provocative statements calling Awami League activists “fake Muslims” and that hurt their religious values and sentiments.
He violated the country’s overall legal framework, created enmity, and hatred, among various communities and classes, and attempted to create unrest in society.
