Bangladesh is now at risk of a massive 8.3 to 8.6 magnitude earthquake, said speakers at a roundtable discussion on Tuesday.
The speaker said that the country has a massive earthquake threat. So, a long-term plan should be taken to mitigate the potential risk of earthquakes.
Dhaka University (DU) Pro-VC (Education) Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal said this while presenting the keynote at a round table meeting on ‘Bangladesh Earthquake Risk Mitigation and Preparation’ at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the university.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman was present at the meeting as a chief guest.
Mentioning that earthquake tolerance is an important consideration in the construction houses, he said, “Everyone has to play their responsible roles from their position”.
“Teachers, researchers, policy makers, media workers and professionals of public and private organizations should all work together to mitigate the country’s earthquake risk,” ASM Maksud Kamal added.
Emphasizing to build social awareness in this regard, he said, “Building codes should be followed properly in house construction and earthquake tolerance should be checked seriously.”
DU Earth and Environmental Science Faculty Dean Professor Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman, President of the DU Teachers Association Professor Dr. Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense Director Mizanur Rahnman, among others took part at the round table meeting.
