Youths going towards moral decay due to social Apps
Syed Shemul Parvez :
Video sharing apps like TikTok and Likee are hugely popular among the young people across the whole world including Bangladesh. Foul language, bad gestures and scenes of torture are often seen in short video apps to increase more views. As a result, obscenity and social violence are spreading at an alarming rate in Bangladesh. Rape, trafficking of women and distancing from family are also increasing.
Experts say that the society is going towards moral decay and paralysis after seeing these videos. Children are becoming addicted to prone day by day which turns into various crimes including rape incident.
According to sources, earlier these two popular platforms TikTok and Likee were considered for the source of healthy and transparent entertainment, but now-a-days these apps have become tools of moral and social degradation, especially for the teenagers and young generation.
Many people, especially teenagers, post obscene and immoral videos on these apps, which are making them morally degraded.
On February 9, a man (torturer) tied the mother and daughter to a tree and released the video in this site on the accusation of theft in Noakhali. Apart from this, at least half a hundred young women have been trapped and trafficked to neighbouring country India with the lure of becoming TikTok stars.
Not only that, TikTok is so popular among the youth that the sight of teenagers skipping school and recording videos on the open road is now a daily occurrence. Apart from current songs, famous people’s quotes, religious speech, gestures, videos are also made with children for the sake of popularity.
These apps are misguiding the youth by impairing their morality, social norms and mutual respect. Unethical activities, including prostitution, are being happened in those parties.
Experts say that children’s social interaction with sports is decreasing due to the influence of TikTok and Likee. They are not shying away from humiliating women in their addiction to increase views.
When asked, Society and crime expert Dr. Tawohidul Haque, also Assistant professor,
Institute of Social Welfare and Research, told The New Nation that the youth involved in making these video are earning huge money by making obscene and immoral content. Even an unhealthy competition is going on among users of TikTok and Likee in order to increase the numbers of their followers and views.
But the issue is whether the state supports this income? If not, action must be taken. Since we don’t see any government measure then it has to be assumed that the government is supporting this type of income, Dr. Touhidul said.
Faroq Hossain, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of media and public relations department of DMP, says that our surveillance is always active on online. Police have increased vigilance so that no one can make such videos on social media and no one can get involved in crime, he said.
It is mentionable that Restrictions were imposed in India and Nepal to protect children and teenagers from the ill effects of TikTok and Likee.
However, IT experts and technicians advice the government to take the similar measures in Bangladesh to curb the trend.
