Upazila Parishad Association holds press conference

Bangladesh Upazila Parishad Association Sylhet Division Branch and Sylhet District Branch organized press conference at Sylhet Zilla Parishad meeting hall on Monday. This press conference was organized to protest the assassination attempt on Shibpur Upazila Chairman Harun-or-Rashid of Narsingdi last February 25.
Sylhet Sadar Upazila Chairman and Upazila Parishad Association Sylhet Divisional Branch President Ashfaq Ahmad gave a written speech at the press conference.
He said that after the attack on the Ghoraghat upazila executive officer in 2020, security has been strengthened including providing them with gunmen. But the issue of upazila chairman or zilla parishad chairmen as public representatives was not considered. But it was in this Sylhet that a UP member was shot dead in front of the PIO office. But the security of the public representatives has not been strengthened despite repeated requests.
Ashfaq Ahmad said that the Chairman of Shibpur Upazila Parishad of Narsingdi, Harun-ur-Rashid, was attacked by miscreants at his residence in the early hours of February 25.
He had 4 bullet wounds in his body. He is currently battling death in the hospital. We strongly condemn and protest this assassination attempt.
In the press conference, the Upazila Parishad Association Sylhet division and district branch presented three demands.
The demands are- Punishment is effective by immediately arresting the culprits and bringing them under the law. Security of all elected members and other officials of Upazila Parishad has been strengthened. All district and upazila council chairpersons and municipal mayors should take immediate action to ensure personal and council security.
Meanwhile, in a written statement at the press conference, Ashfaq Ahmad also said that although the upazila system has been revived after a long time, it is still unable to function independently. The circular is still being worked on. The Upazila Parishad Association has also petitioned the High Court in this regard.
